Projects

In addition to AmTrykes and scholarships, Ambucs also has several other projects that further our mission of providing mobility and independence for people with disabilities.

Ramp BuildingTahoka ramp

Building ramps to create accessible homes and businesses for people with disabilities is another project which AMBUCS chapters hold close to their hearts. The picture to the right is of a recent ramp that was built to allow a disabled Vietnam Vet to easily get out of his home.  It makes a big difference to people when they are given the freedom to go past their front door.

Universally Accessible Playgrounds

AMBUCS helps fund the creation of playgrounds that can be enjoyed by children of all ages and abilities. A great example of a local project is the AMBUCS Hub City Playground located in Maxey Park. In 2003, the 20,000 square foot playground was opened to the public and provides integrated play/learn structures for the enjoyment of children of all ages and abilities. This nationally recognized playground is wheelchair accessible and offers numerous bridges, slides and lookouts. Other amenities include a wheelchair accessible sandbox and swing area. Located near the medical community, the playground has been an ideal location for physical therapy sessions.

Challenger Little League Field

The AMBUCS clubs of Lubbock were a vital part of the creation of the Lubbock Challenger Little League field located at Bill McAlister Park on Brownfield HWY and Milwaukee Ave. Challenger Field was built for mentally and physically disabled children to play baseball. An artificial turf infield and flat bases allow children of all physical capacity to enjoy baseball like many of their fellow peers.

Kids Christmas

Every year around Christmas, members of Caprock AMBUCS get together with families with disabled children to have a good meal.  If the children were good during the year, Santa Claus makes a visit and gives all the children presents.

ASK

The AMBUCS Share4Life Komputers Project was started in Norman, OK in January 1998. The Sooner AMBUCS refurbish donated computers and give them to children and adults with disabilities at no charge. AMBUCS has given away more than 3,000 computers.
